Drone Deploys in Just Minutes but Flies for Hours

Drone Deploys in Just Minutes but Flies for Hours Drone Deploys in Just Minutes but Flies for Hours Drone Deploys in Just Minutes but Flies for HoursMartin UAVs V-BAT autonomous military drone looks like nothing else in the sky. The composite aircraft consists of an 8-foot-long rocket-like fuselage with thin, 9-foot-wide wings towards the rear. Instead of a tail section, it has a large ducted engine. This is V-BATs sole means of propulsion. Combined with its control ordnungsprinzip, it enables the drone to hover vertically, climb 500 feet, and transition seamlessly to horizontal flight. As it hovers near the ground, employees can shove it so it tilts. Once released, it straightens up and finds its original position.V-BATs ducted fan is at the heart of the design, said Austin Howard, Martins engineering lead. Ducted fans mount spinning blades inside a cylindrical tube, or duct. The duct prevents thrust generated by the propeller tips from escaping.Ready for takeoff. Image Martin UAVIt sucks a whole lot more air through the duct than an unducted fan would, and provides about half of thrust in hover orientation, Howard said.Editors Pick Universal Robots bestattungs New York Stock Exchange, Manufacturer AttentionMore for You Global Talent Makes American Industry Stronger The military funded several small ducted fan drones 15 years ago. They essentially placed a ducted fan in the center of a short, squat body. These drones worked like helicopters and had limited range. They fell out of favor when batteries improved enough to add electric propellers to airplane-style craft, enabling them to hover and fly.By adding a fuselage and wing to the ducted fan, Martin found a way to extend the drones mission. We knew how to hover and fly on the wing, Howard said. The big hurdle was figuring out how to get the computer to go between the two.In the beginning, we figured we would point the noise down fast and it would go into a dive and we could then pull it out and fly horizontal ly, he added. In the past five years, we found there is a stable trim condition from 90 degrees nose up to 0 degrees horizontal. To take advantage of that stable region, V-BAT uses throttle, which controls thrust, and the ducts eight control vanes, which vector thrust from the propeller in any direction. By measuring things like orientation relative to the ground, airspeed, ground speed, and GPS location, Howard learned to guide the V-BAT through the transition using closed loop PID controller and an autopilot system Martin built from scratch.Weve been reliably transitioning for over five years now and have never had an instance of controller failure, Howard said. This reliability came at a cost. Martin could not find an off-the-shelf autopilot system to fly its unique aircraft. Instead, it has spent the past three years developing its own flight controller. The V-BATs chief advantage is simplicity. It weighs only 65 lb (without fuel) and deploys in 30 minutes from a 20-square-foot spa ce (since the duct protects operators from the propeller). It requires no catapults, rails, or nets to catch it when it returns. Yet it can cruise for eight hours at 45 knots/hour with an 8-lb payload in its replaceable nose section. Because it can land vertically practically anywhere, it can carry delicate cameras or instruments without fear of damage. The military wants radio and surveillance capabilities and a smaller footprint that they can deploy rapidly without airfield, Howard said. And its small enough to fit into helicopters and Humvees versus a C-130 cargo jet.Not only does V-BAT look like nothing else in the sky, but it delivers in ways most drones cannot yet match.Read More Exclusive Articles from ASME.orgThe Critical Need For 5G Cellular ServiceManufacturing Takes FlightNavy Sails into Supply Chain with Metal 3D PrintingThe military wants radio and surveillance capabilities and a smaller footprint that they can deploy rapidly without airfield. 4 Important Things to Do Before Your First Day at Your New Job

4 Important Things to Do Before Your First Day at Your New Job What should you do in that strange limbo period after youve accepted ajob offer and before you have started your new job apart from congratulating yourself and indulging in a few celebratory drinks, of course? Should you be settling old scores with your boss or coworkers? Should you badmouth your employer on social media? Should you do absolutely nothing but wait? I probably wouldnt advise any of these actions, as they are generally negative and self-defeating, and they dont move you towards your new goals. Instead, I would recommend that you focus on positive actions to maximize the potential future value of your relationships with your old employer and colleagues and toincrease your ability to hit the ground running and excel in your new role.Tothis end, I have outlined four important things to do before your first day at your new j ob1. Preserve, Consolidate, and Use Your Existing RelationshipsYour current colleagues atyour soon-to-be former employer will make up your future network, and theycould help you get jobs in the future, or even make new geschftsleben contracts. Its also likely that some of the people in your network may know people at your new employer, to whom they can refer you. These people may also know a little bit about how that business works, and they may be able to give you some useful pointers to help you acclimate yourself quickly and succeed. Otherwise, they may simply have some tips and advice to help you make a great start in your new role. The point is that you shouldnt take your existing organization for granted it may still be able to serve you well in the final weeks before you leave. Network to the maximum during this period make timewith your existing colleagues in order to bury the hatchet where necessary, exchange contacts, tap them for knowledge and connections, thank them for t heir help, and offer to reciprocate in the future. Actively preserving and priming your existing network is one of the key positive actions to take before you beginyour new job.2. Ask to Join a Social or Team Meeting at Your New Employer Prior to Day OneIts much easier to prepare for day one if you know what to expect in terms of culture, personalities, and go-to people. Youll feel much less like a deerin the headlights. In fact, research shows that new hires who build effective information relationships actually onboard faster and get up to speed more quickly.Contact your new manager and ask whether you would be able to tag along to an after-work happy hour or attend a weekly team meeting to help you meet your new teammates and get into the rhythm of the business.3. Start Building Your Relationship With Your Future BossResearch from Dale Carnegie Training(and others) suggests that yourrelationship with your boss can be one of the fruchtwein important factors driving your engagement level and future success within a business.Start trying to cultivate your relationship with your boss before day one. Contact your future boss and demonstrate your enthusiasm by asking them to recommend any reading material that might help prime you for your new role. Of course, you should consider that your new boss might be pressed for time if so, you cansuggest several pieces of reading material and ask them to recommend the most pertinent one.Alternatively, you could perhaps start sending your new boss a fewlinks to relevant stories ornews pieces that may be beneficial to them as a way to show your value. You could also comment on a tweet or blog post that they have written in order to start building bridges and fostering familiarity.4. Ask for Your Orientation Program in the Week Before You StartIfyou are joining a highly disciplined blue chip, odds are that the company will have a highly orchestrated induction and orientation process, and it may be able to send you some prerea ding material to help you prep and address your first-day nerves. If you are joining a smaller company, theres a good chance your new employer may not have a very tightly run program. In this case, your advanced contactcan serve as an important reminder that you are coming, triggering the company to start getting your orientation program together and reducing the possibility that your first day will be a chaotic one.Remember, when reaching out and connecting with colleagues at your new business, you are not just trying to build relationships. You are also trying to pinpoint what your key priorities might be and whats currently exciting your boss or keeping them up at night. Identifying these things before you begin a new jobcan help youmake the biggest possible impact on your bosss life in the shortest possible time after joining.

Help! My Boss Has it Out for Me

Help My Boss Has it Out for MeHelp My Boss Has it Out for MeDear Fran,I would love to share my name, but I am afraid of retaliation.Let me start by telling you that I have worked for the saatkorn company for eight years and have run the same team for seven.During that time, Ive had six different executive leaders. To make a long story short, a little over a year ago, my relationship with my most recent direct manager started to go downhill. It all started, I believe, when I gave herbei feedback about a decision that had been made while I was on vacation. Not knowing that she was the one who had made that decision, I shared my opinion with her. After that, she began to act differently toward me- everything seemed to turn into a battle between her decisions and mine. At times, I thought she felt threatened by my knowledge, so I stopped questioning her decisions and just applied them. And I respected most of her decisions, but I mucksmuschenstill told her why I didnt support the others. After I shared with her the great news about my engagement to a co-worker (who does elend work directly for me- our relationship does not violate company policy), the situation got even worse for both me and my husband. My leader turns every situation into something to use against me. She holds me responsible for any mistake made by any of my team members- including things my peers (at the same level as me) do. I am expected to chase them down for information on what should already be a priority to them. I feel that it can get harassing, so I leave them alone. But by leaving them alone, I am being told that my performance is not meeting the companys expectations. There are many decisions that are out of my control, but every time I say something, my leader tells me that they sound like excuses. Sometimes, she will even take my team from what Ive instructed them to do so that they can do something else completely different from their job responsibilities. I go home stressed, in a bad mood, crying, and disappointed. Ive talked to HR about this, and how I feel this has turned into a personal issue, but it gets ignored. I get told that I have to work my differences out with her, and so I try, but it only gets worse. So basically, I have to deal with it. I dont think its appropriate to report to someone who has a personal issue against me.I now feel threatened about my job security, and I am uncomfortable reporting to work and talking to her, because anything I say or do will be used against me. Help What can I do to change this situation?- Anonymous and DistraughtDear Anonymous,The very first time I read your letter, I thought Wow, what a mess. Its time to move on. Eight years at the same job, or even at the same company, is a long time. We are well past the days when you stayed at a single company for your entire career and got a gold watch when you retired- job hopping is more the norm. And even after reading your letter several more times, I still think its time t o move on. Or at least see whats out there. And when you do, remember that we find jobs most often through networking, not only by putting a resume on a website. So start working your network and your husbands, and also figure out whom you can trust and start working their networks, too. Make yourself visible. Go to conferences. A few times a week, have coffee with someone in that network, looking for leads, introductions, and opportunities. But, the question youve actually asked is what you can do to change the situation- so Ill focus my advice there. You could try going over the executive leaders head to complain, a risky proposition. Heres a less risky way of proceeding Try to get reassigned in the company in a neutral way. First, research different possibilities, identify what skills, ideas, and energy you can bring to new areas in the company, and make a list of your accomplishments in your current assignment. Then, go to someone who could help (probably not HR) and say that, aft er eight years, youd like a new challenge. Dont say anything negative about your leader. It doesnt reflect very well on the company that in eight years youve reported to six different people. Tell me Where did they go? Did they leave the company? Were they fired? Or were they promoted to preside over other teams as executive leaders? If one you worked well with in the past is now an executive leader for one of the other groups, he or she may be the person to approach.Next, try to undertake a non-emotional, logical analysis of the situation. For example, check out the profitability of your division under the leadership of this woman versus the profitability under the others. If this woman has suddenly made things wildly profitable, you probably arent going to be able to do anything. You could, of course, look at morale under each of these leaders. Are you the only team leader having a problem with this woman? Is there a way you can find that out discreetly? One of the most important th ings Ive learned in life is that we cant change how others behave- we are only responsible for how we behave. However, relationships are a little bit like dancing. If you change your steps, the other person will be forced to change her steps. So, think about how this all started and what you might have done differently (this may also help you in the future). Then, consider What might you do differently now to try to change your dance with her?I assume you havent told her you think shes threatened by you, but sometimes our emotions are more obvious to others than we think they are. If she senses you think shes threatened, or if she is actually threatened, how do you expect her to react? I say this not to embarrass you, but to help you try to begin to rationally observe your own role in this situation, for that is the place where change can begin. At the same time, remember that knowledge is power. And believe it or not, so is empathy. Its possible that this situation isnt as personal youre making it. Most of us go through life with distorted but habitual ways of thinking that go under names like catastrophizing or black-and-white thinking. Your automatic assumption is that this woman has it out for you, but maybe that isnt completely true. One strategy for coping with such negative thinking is to do a kind of Socratic exercise. Think of the belief you have, then think of examples that support the idea, as you have done in your letter, and then counter the belief by thinking of examples that contradict it. For example, maybe this woman is also under great pressure for reasons youre unaware of, or maybe shes about to be fired. Sometimes developing empathy for the other person or a different way of thinking about a situation can go a long way.As for your stress level and crying, try some stress management techniques, such as meditation, deep breathing, mindfulness, or writing. And adapt at least one technique from positive psychology. Every day, write down three thi ngs youre grateful for. And be specific. The job isnt everything, right? You just got married (or are about to), right? Can you focus some on that? And finally, it strikes me as a bit strange that you mention your husband, but fail to say what he thinks about this, except to say his situation has also gotten worse since you announced your engagement. Are you suggesting theres a relationship between the two? In any case, I think one of you may need to make a plan to leave the situation, and two of you need to sit down and talk about this and decide as a couple what to do.I would consider which of you can deal, or learn to deal, with the work situation more effectively and which of you has better prospects elsewhere. Once you decide, then you (or he) must give all support to the other in the quest to try to find a new situation, either within the company or elsewhere. Once thats done, the other can start looking to move, too.I wish you the best in your job and in your life, and thanks for asking.FranHave a question for Fran? What I Learned From Being Laid Off Three Times - The Muse

What I Learned From Being Laid Off Three Times - The MuseWhat I Learned From Being Laid Off Three Times Theres no such thing as a job for life anymore. Youre not even guaranteed that the type of job you pursue at the start of your career will exist later on. I should know. I came up in an extremely visible industry thats declining rapidly berichterstattung. From 2008 to 2017, US newsroom employment fell by nearly a quarter and in recent years about 1,000 journalists get laid off a month. From 2010 onwards, Ive been made redundant (the British version of being laid off) from three jobs in news each time, my life and career prospects improved. Thats the surprising upside of a less-secure working world. You begin to adapt to the precariousness of employment, learn new skills, and look at adjacent industries where suitable jobs are still being created. Heres a look at the layoffs I went through, what the process welches like, how I felt, and what I learned from each experience.Layoff 1D iving Into New SkillsBack in 2010, I welches 27 years old and three years into my first full-time job in journalism, working on the International Headline desk in the London bureau of The Associated Press. There had been ongoing cuts across the company since the 2008 financial crisis, but theyd happened in distant locations and werent really on my radar. Our desks senior editor had a background in radio, and would often ask me to do voiceovers for news packages. It seemed natural when she suggested that I try out for shifts on the broadcast news desk, acting as a video producer. I thought she was just pushing me a little, as moving from voicing the news packages to making them didnt seem like a big deal. In retrospect, its possible that my editor knew our desk was getting shut down. Getting pushed out of my first job, rather than deciding to leave it, left me feeling helpless, as though I didnt get to make decisions about my career. When we were told that the International Headline de sk would cease to exist, it didnt feel personal. This was our whole team, after all. But it did feel world-ending. I hadnt held a full-time position in journalism anywhere else. Would I ever again? Getting pushed out of my first job, rather than deciding to leave it, left me feeling helpless, as though I didnt get to make decisions about my career. As it turned out, I didnt actually end up leaving the company. Thanks to the connections Id made and experience Id gotten before my desk was closed, I was able to freelance on the broadcast news desk nearly full time for a year. It was a steep learning curve for someone whod gone into journalism to write, even after the trial shifts Id completed before the layoffs. But in the years since, video editing has become an essential skill for journalists, so I was lucky to learn this on the job early on in my career. What I Learned Be Open to LearningMy first layoff showed me that its wise to take advantage of still being inside the company buildi ng by asking for opportunities to develop your skills and meet people outside your department. In my next role, I would volunteer to help at conferences, which were great for networking. By the time my second layoff came around, I requested training, and got to join in with a couple of sessions before I left, which were helpful for my next job. My first layoff showed me that its wise to take advantage of still being inside the company building by asking for opportunities to develop your skills and meet people outside your department. So whether or not you fear layoffs are coming at your own company, look around and see what you want to learn while youre there. Then make a plan and ask to go for it. The worst that can happen is youll get a No, or no response at all. The best is youll stay employed, or at least learn a new set of skills that could help you down the line. Read More 5 Career Lessons You Only Learn From Being Laid OffLayoff 2Rebranding MyselfBy 2015, I was working for a c harity called Media Trust, which helps improve diversity in the UK media and train other charities to tell their stories effectively. I started out there acquiring new programs for the in-house TV station, then moved on to another role, editing a newswire in partnership with Press Association, the British national news agency. The job was a step up from my AP days, as I was in charge now, overseeing the work of two other journalists. The wire carried news from charities, and part of my job involved reaching out to non-profits and helping them identify which of their stories were newsworthy. I encouraged them to track their social media statistics to see which stories did best with their audience and might do even better with a wider readership. I also introduced charity clients to SEO (search engine optimization) and Google Trends. Over time, this all became formalized as training, and I started leading sessions for the charities as well. I drew up a plan, writing down the added val ue I brought to the organization, and presented it to the people in charge. When I was told my role was at risk of being eliminated- which, under UK law, automatically kicks off a fixed-term consultation period- I decided to show my employers how useful I was, and how they could use my training skills in other parts of the business. I drew up a plan, writing down the added value I brought to the organization, and presented it to the people in charge. In the end, I wasnt able to save my role. Still, taking the time to document all my newly-acquired training experience showed me that Id grown during my three years at Media Trust and gave me confidence that Id be able to find something else quickly. And I did Within six weeks, I was working as an vorwort trainer at the Daily Mirror, a role that I was able to land thanks to my ability to tell my new career story. What I Learned Narrative Is EverythingDevising a plan to save my role made me realize that I had a compelling story to tell abo ut my career and my ability to take on new challenges.Every so often, you might want to take stock of where you are and what youve learned, maybe even create a document listing it all, to help you figure out where you stand, what you could do next in your career, and how to tell your story.Every so often, you might want to take stock of where you are and what youve learned, maybe even create a document listing it all, to help you figure out where you stand, what you could do next in your career, and how to tell your story.Read More The Hard Conversation You Need to Prep for if Your Jobs on the LineLayoff 3Finally Going FreelanceAt the Daily Mirror, my duties involved making sure new writers could put together a news story in the office content management system (CMS) and getting everyone in the newsroom up to date on digital practice, such as how to search for and promote stories ansprechbar. My training experience definitely helped me get the job, and gave me the confidence to buil d the newly created role from scratch while also continuing to do the work of an online journalist to inform my training I wrote stories, filmed Facebook Lives and, eventually, started a successful podcast.Within 18 months, I was working across the whole company, traveling between offices in England, Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. I was going to external meetings with the National Council for the Training of Journalists, the group in charge of British newspaper journalism qualifications. I was starting to get invitations to speak at podcasting events, which I really wanted to take up, but couldnt really justify in terms of my job as editorial trainer.Suchandrika Chakrabarti posing with her fake front page at her Daily Mirror leaving party courtesy of Emmeline Saunders. So this time, when I was told my role was at risk of redundancy and I was handed a letter with details of a payout, I feltrelief. Id outgrown the role and was keen to get back to writing and making more audio, and I wanted to find out where else my career could go. I was ready to go freelance, with a financial cushion to get me through the lean early months. I put the news out on social media and received private messages of support and inquiries about my availability. What I Learned Sometimes You Need a NudgeThe end of a job is an opportunity to re-think your direction it may even be the push you need to make you move on to your next chapter. My latest layoff, last year, was my third, and it was easier to bear than the ones Id gone through before. Id learned so much from my first two layoffs, both in terms of new skills and how to deal with my job disappearing. I realized that Id outgrown the role, and the layoff is what forced me to move on.In the first several weeks of 2019, its become clearer than ever that no digital journalism job is truly safe. This is a painful lesson to learn for those affected by layoffs, and its the specter hovering over those left behind in staff jobs, taking on the work their former colleagues once did. While it might sound impossible in the moment, know that the sting of a layoff recedes and trust that, in some cases, itll actually push you toward something better. Its important to allow yourself time to come to terms with what happened, because you might experience a form of grief. My new portfolio career- working as a freelancer on multiple projects at once- means Im no longer at risk of losing my income stream all in one go. For more and more of us, repeated redundancies and layoffs will become a fact of life. That doesnt mean you have to avoid staff jobs and go freelance like me but it does suggest that you need to find a way to define your professional self outside of the confines of your current job title. Why the U.S. Flag Is Worn Backward on Army Uniforms

Why the U.S. Flag Is Worn Backward on Army Uniforms Why the U.S. Flag Is Worn Backward on Army Uniforms American military uniforms feature the U.S. flag, which is worn facing backward. The rule is that the blue field of stars should always be in the highest position of honor on the uniform. That position has always been the right shoulder with the flags blue stars facing forward. History of Flags On The Right The place of honor for the American flag is always to the right of other organizational flags like the USMC or Navy flags.  When carried with an organization flag as in the March of the Colors, the U.S. flag is carried to the right of the line of march. The organizational flag may be dipped in salute to the reviewing officer at a parade or during the National Anthem, but the American flag is never dipped in salute. How Flags Are Worn on Army Uniforms Army Regulation 670-1,  Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia, is the governing authority for how Army uniforms are worn. Specifically, paragraph 28-18 governs the wear of the  U.S. flag  on Army uniforms. Specifically, the regulation states that: all soldiers will wear the full-color U.S. flag embroidered insignia on utility and organizational uniforms unless deployed or in a field environment. Soldiers will wear the subdued tactical flag insignia while deployed or in a field environment. The subdued tactical flag worn on deployments or in the field features muted colors. History of the Backward Flag Basically, the idea behind the backward American flag on Army uniforms is to make it look as though the flag is flying in the breeze as the person wearing it moves forward. During the Civil War, both mounted cavalry and infantry units would designate a standard bearer, who carried the flag into battle. As this standard bearer charged, his forward momentum caused the flag to stream back. Since the Stars and Stripes are mounted with the canton closest to the pole, that section of the flag stayed to the right, while the stripes flew to the left. Therefore, the flag is worn on the right shoulder, and wearing it backward gives the effect of the flag flying in the breeze as the wearer moves forward. Updates to the Army Uniform Flag Rule In 2003 the uniform regulation for the Army was updated.  Army Regulation 670-1, “Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia,” addresses explicitly the proper and lawful placement of the U.S. flag patch on the Army uniform. The regulation states that the stars are to face forward. When authorized for application to the proper uniform the American flag patch is to be worn, right or left shoulder. One of the flags will, therefore, be reversed (right shoulder) in order to adhere to the regulation and custom of having the stars facing forward. The term, “Assaulting Forward” has been adopted by combat troops (instead of facing forward). The appropriate flag (color or subdued) for the right shoulder sleeve is identified as the reverse side flag. The flag became a mandatory uniform component at all times in 2005.  Chapter 1, Title 4, of the United States Code, provides for the design of the U.S. flag and specifies the colors as red, white, and blue. When approved for wear, the full-color U.S. flag cloth replica is sewn half an inch below the right shoulder seam. It should be worn with the temperate, hot-weather, enhanced hot weather, and desert battle dress uniform; the battle dress uniform field jacket; and the cold-weather uniform.

How to Decline a Job Offer

How to Decline a Job Offer How to Decline a Job Offer How to Decline a Job Offer: 4 Expert Tips & Template So you built the resume, crushed the interview, and- lo and behold- you got an offer. Actually, you have two. What do you do next? Dont worry- just read our guide and learn how to decline a job offer. 1. How To Turn Down a Job Offer- 4 Tips If you find yourself in the enviable position of being able to decline a job offer, be smart; don’t burn bridges with a company whose offer youre turning down. Youre in a delicate situation when you have to turn someone down, so its important you know how to politely decline a job offer. Our tips and template will help you come away looking professional when turning down a job offer, and youll be sure to maintain a good relationship with the company. So read on to learn how to reject a job offer like a professional. Tip #1. Say Thank You Gratitude is the most crucial emotion to convey. The hiring manager has spent hours going over your application, looking into your work history and references, and talking with colleagues about bringing you on. You should be flattered to have received the job offer- now is the time to show that. Tip #2. Decline the Job Offer Now Have some respect for the companys time and give them your answer as fast as possible. They will want to move forward with another applicant, and if you delay you are costing them unnecessary time and effort. Tip #3. Tell Them Why Be honest as to why youve chosen not to join their company. Theyll appreciate the honesty. Avoid using the situation as an opportunity for critiquing them, but you can let them know you feel their position isnt a good fit for you. You never know- if you explain that you dont feel like a particular position is a fit for you, they might offer you another role that is a good fit for you. Tip #4. Stay in Touch You never know when youll run into people, and its remarkably common if you are working in the same industry. When declining a job offer, tell the company that you look forward to running into them or seeing them in the future. This point is especially important if things should go wrong at the company where youve accepted work. 2. Declining a Job Offer Email Sample Dear [Hiring Manager Name], Thank you so much for the offer to work as a [Position Title] at [Company Name]. I very much appreciate your time and consideration, and your effort in answering my questions and helping me navigate the application process. I was very happy to meet you and [Names of Other People in Interview] on [Interview Date]. While working with you as [Position Name]  sounds like a tremendous opportunity, I have decided to take a different position. [Here you can be as specific or vague as you deem necessary.] Ive enjoyed getting to know you and everyone at [Company Name], and hope we have the chance to meet in the future.  Again, thank you for your consideration and the generous offer. I wish you all the best. Sincerely, [Your Name] 3. Turning Down a Job Offer? Dont Burn Bridges For whatever reason, if things don’t work out at your new job, a  good relationship with the company you previously declined may be beneficial. You could even check in  with them again and see if the position has been filled, or ask if anything else is available. Hopefully you don’t find yourself in this situation, but if you do, it’s wise to build and maintain your previous connections. Be careful though- it could sound like youre the type of worker that jumps ship easily. Make the conversation about how much you want to be at their company and why youve changed your mind. Give an honest reason as to why youre leaving, and above all, be earnest. New Conversation Template Dear [Hiring Managers Name], I hope things are going well  at [Company Name]. Interviewing with you on [Interview Date] was a positive experience and I was hoping to reach out and touch base with you. In my time at my current job/[Current Company Name],  Ive learned that the position isnt quite what I had expected. Im writing to inquire if the position with your company was still available, and if not, if you perhaps were looking to bring someone on in another function. I have attached my updated resume and cover letter. I would love to discuss any opportunities that may be available at this time. Im looking forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your continued consideration. Sincerely, [Your Name] Even after youve found a new job, keep your resume updated! How Career Degrees Can Help You Get Your Dream Job

How Career Degrees Can Help You Get Your Dream Job How Career Degrees Can Help You Get Your Dream Job A huge benefit of career degrees is that they actually put you on exactly the right course for success in your chosen field. In many cases your studies will focus only on things that are necessary or beneficial to performing well in a specific career. Where success in a traditional higher education setting may have a portion of coursework that is heavily focused on career skill development, there will almost always be generalized learning that may or may not translate well to improved performance in your chosen field. That’s why you need to seek a college degree if you are set on entering a certain field. When it comes to career specific training, you are much more likely to receive the hands on training you need to succeed in your chosen career and much less likely to waste time on coursework that may not hold a great deal of benefit. Career degrees can also benefit job seekers by getting them into the workforce more quickly. Due to the fact that there is usually little or no unnecessary coursework, career-specific degrees can also prepare you for a specific career in a shorter time period than a generalized college degree.   By eliminating much of the time spent on developing potentially unnecessary skills and focusing only on the knowledge needed to excel in a particular field, you may be able to dramatically cut down on the time you’ll need to spend earning your degree and get into the workforce faster. Making the decision to pursue a specific career degree is a big decision. You’ll receive valuable and necessary education to prepare you for success in a specific field, but prior to making the commitment to career specific education, it is imperative that you do the necessary research to ensure that it is the correct career path for you. Seek the advice of a career counselor or take a few career aptitude tests  like those here to ensure that you are embarking on a career that you will both love and feel rewarded by. Once you’ve made the decision of the best career path, seeing if there are career degrees available for your chosen field could help you get fully prepared as quickly as possible for the career that you’ve selected.

10 fictional career mentors whose advice you need to take

10 fictional career mentors whose advice you need to take 10 fictional career mentors whose advice you need to take No one ever started their first day at a job knowing everything. New workplaces are unfamiliar and even intimidating at times to younger employees who want to showcase their competence and fresh ideas but worry about screwing up or overstepping boundaries. A career mentor is someone who can fill in the experience gaps and guide you through the rungs of your career ladder because they’ve already dealt with all the new challenges you’re facing. For anyone just starting out in the workforce or long-term employees looking to move to a new phase in their professional life, a career mentor is an invaluable resource. A good mentor will understand your skills and provide opportunities for further training, give you the heads up about important industry events, and offer advice on navigating tricky situations like salary negotiations.Even our greatest fictional heroes like Luke Skywalker and Bilbo Baggins needed an older and wiser figure to guide them along their journeys. If you’ve alwa ys wanted your own mentor to help you take on the workforce there are countless books that can bring you timeless career advice. Here’s our list of the top fictional mentors of all time and what lessons you should take away from them in your own career.1. Mentor: The Odyssey by HomerThe invention of the word “mentor” as we know it today goes all the way back to Ancient Greece in Homer’s “Odyssey,” where the goddess Athena disguised herself as a man named Mentor to advise Odysseys’ son Telemachus through the Trojan War while he awaited the return of his father. The most important thing employees can take away from the relationship between Mentor and Telemachus is time. Meaningful mentorship relationships don’t happen instantly. They have to grow from each person observing the other’s work style, building a sense of trust, and learning how best to communicate personal feedback without trying to force too much change too soon.2. Dumbledore: The Harry Potter series by J. K. RowlingHe may have had his faults when it came not to telling Harry the whole truth about his upcoming battle with Voldemort, but Dumbledore is the mentor you need in those moments of office panic. Whether you’re overwhelmed by an oncoming deadline or a workplace bully, he’ll always be there to remind you that, “Happiness can be found, even in the darkest of times, if one only remembers to turn on the light.”3. Merlin: The Legends of King ArthurAnother magical man with an impressive white beard, Merlin is one of the most well-known mentors in the English canon. As a scientist, counselor to royalty, practitioner of magic, and father figure to young Arthur, Merlin proves that a mentor’s role extends beyond their job duties and can grow into a valuable lifelong relationship.4. Miss Honey: Matilda by Roald Dahl“Miss Jennifer Honey was a mild and quiet person who never raised her voice and was seldom seen to smile, but there is no doubt she possessed that rare gift for bei ng adored by every small child under her care.”Sweet and strong, Miss Honey from Roald Dahl’s classic children’s novel Matilda is the teacher we all wished for growing up. When Matilda demonstrates her immense intelligence by reading Dickens and multiplying large numbers on the first day of class, Miss Honey instantly takes her under her wing to help her learn as much as possible. With this instruction, Matilda is exposed to challenging material others deemed “too hard” for someone her age and discovers incredible powers within her mind.As a manager, Miss Honey would never see talented employees as competition or overstepping their position. Instead, she’d work to promote each individual worker’s career development and special skills, so they can rise as high as possible on the career ladder.5. Julian: The Secret History by Donna TarttTo do a complete 180 from the sweet and nurturing educator-type, we have Professor Juilian Baker from Donna Tartt’s epic murder myster y “The Secret History.” Described by the narrator as a “magical, marvelous talker,” Julian serves as a godly figure to his group of 5 undergrad classic majors. He never wavers when presenting his knowledge and pushes his students to invest themselves so deeply into what they’re learning that assignments feel less like chores and more like sublime, exhilarating adventures. As a mentor and role model, Julian exemplifies finding love within work and never settling for anything less than your dream career.6. Glinda the Good Witch: The Wizard of Oz by Frank L. Baum. There’s been some debate over if the classic Good Witch of Oz is actually a good person or friend to Dorthy at all. I mean, if she had magical powers and knew that the ruby slippers would bring Dorthy home all along, why couldn’t she tell her and take on the Wicked Witch by herself? But the biggest lesson we can take away from Glinda is that mentor’s don’t have all the answers. While they give you the tools (o r shoes) to help you down your career road, at the end of the day it’s up to you to take responsibility for your success.7. Virgil: The Divine Comedy by DanteHopefully, your own career path won’t feel like a slog through the ten circles of hell…but you can still appreciate the excellent guidance Virgil gave Dante during his epic exploration through the afterlife in “The Divine Comedy.” Dante selected Virgil to be his companion throughout the three novels because he greatly admired his writing and hoped that his own poetry would someday live up to Virgil’s legacy.Similarly, you should choose your career mentor based on someone whose work or demeanor you’ve always admired and whose path you would love to emulate as you get further in your career.8. George: The Cookbook Collector by Allegra GoodmanGeorge from Allegra Goodman’s contemporary coming-of-age story, “The Cookbook Collector” is a grouchy, quiet owner of a rare bookshop who acts as a boss and mentor to the young, flighty college-student, Jess.George embodies the stern yet fair mentor type, treating Jess kindly but scolding her for mistreating delicate copies, forgetting to close-up the store properly, or looking down on the importance of protecting what matters most to you. George would be the perfect mentor to a young employee or intern full of passionate ideas but unsure of how to navigate the more corporate and serious sides of the career world.9. Buddy Glass: Franny and Zooey by J.D. SalingerThe first page of J.D. Salinger’s novella “Zooey” opens with Zooey Glass lying in a bathtub and reading a long letter of advice from his older brother Buddy, that he has clearly read many times before judging by it having been”unfolded and refolded on too many private occasions during the last four years.”This cherished letter cautions Zooey to treat people kindly, thinking before he speaks, and quit “running back and forth forever behind grief and high delight.”These timeless pi eces of wisdom are ones we can all use in a fresh workplace. Your career mentors will give you things (both physical tokens and ideas) that you will carry with you years later even if you choose to leave your position or start over in a new field.10. Gandalf: The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Series by J.R.R. TolkienAnd fittingly, we’re rounding out our list of the top fictional career mentors with another iconic bearded wizard. Gandalf the Grey is a mentor who would be right at home serving as a mentor and leader to an entire team of younger workers. Throughout Tolkien’s work, he offers guidance to all of the Hobbits and saves them from peril with his power and expertise. This article originally appeared on Kununu.com and is republished with permission. 10 fictional career mentors whose advice you need to take No one ever started their first day at a job knowing everything. Experience Requirements:  Experience requirements may include the specific skills required for the job and/or the years of experience on the job.Equivalent Experience:  When a job posting says equivalent experience in a job posting, it can mean either experience in lieu of some educational requirements or non-paid experience like an internship or volunteer work in place of paid work experience.Education Requirements:  Employers typically list the educational requirements for a job in job postings and in job descriptions. Required Application Materials:  Required application materials include the documentation you will need to submit to the employer to apply for a job. Supporting documents for a job application may include a resume, a cover letter, transcripts, a writing sample, Veterans Preference documents, portfolios, working papers, and certifications.References:  Some employers require job applicants to provide references with their job application rather than later on in the hiring process.Salary Requirements:  Many job postings ask you to include your salary history or your salary requirements when applying for the position. How to Apply for the Job:  The job posting will provide detailed instructions on how to apply. Its important to follow the directions or your application may not be considered. Options that employers use to receive applications include online applicant tracking systems on company websites, email, in-person applications or applications via job sites like Monster or CareerBuilder. Deadline to Apply In some cases, employers will want to receive an application by a certain date. The application deadline, if there is one, will be listed in the job vacancy notice. Dont wait until close to the deadline to apply. The company may review applications as soon as they are received and you may have a better chance of being considered for an interview if you apply early. How to Decode the Job Posting What does all that information in the job posting mean? What does the employer really want? Learn how to decode a job advertisement and frequently used job search jargon with an explanation of what the company is looking for in applicants. Match Your Qualifications to the Job Job postings can be very detailed and complicated which can make it hard to decide whether you should apply for the job. For example, Ive seen some help wanted ads that list multiple combinations of education and experience. One way to decide when you should take the time to apply, or if its not worth the time and effort, is to make a list of the job requirements, including skills, experience, and education, in the ad. Then list your qualifications next to the requirements. If your qualifications are a close match for the job, it can make sense to apply. There may not be a perfect candidate for the job, and if you come close, you could make the cut.   On the other hand, if you come up short on everything the employer is seeking, its not worth spending the time to put in an application. If youre not a match with what the company is seeking in an employee, your resume wont get selected by the software many companies use to choose candidates for interviews.

Ways to Run Your Own Advertising Campaign

Ways to Run Your Own Advertising Campaign Ways to Run Your Own Advertising Campaign Creating and implementing an advertising campaign is no easy task. There is a reason there are thousands of advertising agencies all around the world, full of people who have spent their lives devoted to the skill and science of advertising.   Having said that, when funds are very tight, and you are just starting out, it can be daunting to hire an agency - even a small shop, or one freelancer. But if you are truly invested in your product or service, and are passionate about getting the word out, there are steps you can follow to do it yourself. Establish Your Marketing Strategy and Goals Nothing can help you identify your goals more than your marketing plan. Youll have to identify your unique value proposition, or what makes you different from the competition. Are you offering a product or service? For example, if youre selling consulting services, youll need to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise int he particular area that makes your offering unique. By sitting down and writing out a plan, you will learn a lot about your company, your competitors, and your long-term goals by creating and following your marketing plan. Create a Plan of Action Once you have your marketing plan and the goals of your marketing strategy, you must create a plan of action. Your plan of action also gives you the crucial info you can use in executing your ad strategy. Within the overall advertising campaign, you want to have a written plan of actionable steps for achieving your goals. Decide On Your Advertising Budget How you advertise depends on your ad budget. You need to use your advertising money strategically. If youre only allowing a small portion of the money to advertising, you wouldnt want to throw it all into the production of one commercial that runs at 2 a.m. Know exactly how much you will spend on your advertising first so you can make wise decisions in the creation and placement of all ad mediums. Hunt Down Affordable Advertising Options Running your own ad campaign means you have to be your own media director. Youve got to find the best ad placement and the most affordable opportunities to fit into your budget. If youre limited to a very small budget, you can find many ways to bypass high advertising costs. Know Your Target Audience You cant advertise effectively if you dont hit your target audience. You need to know just who they are before you start creating your ads, to take full advantage of every dollar you spend on media. For example, if your company sells scooters to seniors, you dont want to invest heavily in social media. Seniors prefer more traditional options, like local TV, newspapers, and even ads in local stores.  Do your customers live in a specific region of the country? What are their interests? Are they mostly men or women? What social media sites would they likely visit? Advertise With Appropriate Mediums Of all the  different advertising mediums  you can use, you have to be able to use these mediums to your benefit. Spending all of your money on a  direct mail campaign  when your ad dollars would be better spent on social media and viral videos are  going to limit how many customers you couldve gained. Take a look at each medium, think about your target audience, take a look at your marketing plan and your plan of action and decide which medium(s) will be best for your ad dollars. For example, LinkedIn might be a good option if youre targeting professionals. Facebook might be an option for targeting families. Its also important to test your marketing plan by advertising with multiple mediums and multiple groups of people within the same medium to gauge the success of the campaign. Start small and take out small ads on social media sites to test out whether itll work for a larger campaign. By doing multiple tests, youll gain valuable research and data about your audience and what works and what doesnt in your marketing pitch. Once you have a successful pitch and a site or media channel that works for you, you can then increase your investment to create a larger campaign. Each business is different, and its crucial to know what type of advertising is best for you. Dont Be Afraid to Hire Freelancers If you cant turn your advertising over to an agency, still consider  hiring a freelance copywriter and or graphic designer. These professionals know what makes a good advertisement. Many freelancers have worked in  advertising agencies,  so you get the  benefit of their expertise. Plus, freelancers can give you professional copy and materials at an affordable cost. A Consistent Message is Key If youre running online ads, TV and radio commercials, print ads and a direct mail campaign, keep them consistent. Use the same announcer and music for your commercials. Other materials should use the same colors and fonts. Use the same tagline. You want to keep everything consistent, so your potential customers start identifying your  tagline, your colors, your font, your announcer, jingle - everything - that relates to your companys ad campaign.   Repurpose your content and use it for multiple formats and websites. For example, if you created an informational video, use the content in the video and repurpose it to be downloaded from your website as a special report or white paper. Or you can break up the information from the video and post portions of it in a series of articles on your website, LinkedIn groups, or Facebook. In each posting, you can include a link back to your website to download the entire report or watch the video. By repurposing your content, youll be driving traffic to your product, service, or newsletter sign up sheet and in the process build an email list of prospects. Repetition Works Wonders It typically takes anywhere from three to five times for a prospect to view your work, product or service before committing to buy it. Buying space for one radio commercial that airs once at 4:30 in the morning isnt going to get much of a response. You want commercials to have a larger frequency so you can increase your chances of hitting that target audience. If youre running a direct mail campaign, decide the frequency of your materials up front. Once you send your initial materials out, how many times will you send out follow up materials? Know the answers before you begin to help maximize your strategys success. If In Doubt, Get The Books Out There is no shame in admitting that you dont know what youre doing at any point in the process, which is why testing your audience and getting feedback from customers is critical to your success. There are  plenty of books  that are available and be sure to watch out for newly released titles since theyll likely have the most current advertising trends.

Robotic Butler May Help Humanity

Robotic Butler May Help Humanity Robotic Butler May Help Humanity Robotic Butler May Help Humanity You know youre probably doing well financially if you have a butler. But Professor Siddhartha Srinivasa of the University of Washington (UW) wants everyone to have one. He is part of a team working on what he calls a robotic butler, which might one day do everything from feeding those with disabilities to putting away the dishes after the meal. Starting his teams work at Carnegie Mellon University and taking it with him to the University of Washington, HERB has been a journey more than a decade in the making. We were focused seriously on cleaning up tasks, things that had to deal with real clutter in a real kitchen environment, says Srinivasa, professor of computer science and robotics at UW. But we also wanted to ultimately get away from contrived environments and have them be able to move around with humans. One task was picking up coffee mugs all over the lab and loading them into a dishwasher. We always wanted to play with the stakes when dealing with real world objects. HERB uses complex algorithms to sort clutter more efficiently. Image: Carnegie Mellon University HERB, which stands for Home Exploring Robot Butler, began with the visual of a single arm segue base, he says, but took a measurable leap with the 2.0 version. With two arms and a neck and a head sitting on top of pretty much the same base, it had an upgrade to beefier computers, he says. 3.0 added, among other things, two wheels on a cylinder, and an omni-directional base not just moving back and forward but sideways. Thats important when you need to go through a crowd. HERB also went away from a home brew head to one that was being used in a DARPA challenge. This version had HERB being around people and being close to them and interacting with them, says Srinivasa. Effective, seemless, and expressive in its attentions and we wanted it to be accepted and liked by people, so we worked partly on robot-human interaction. When HERB comes into a kitchen in a few years, a human may not want to leave the kitchen if we can make it so they can work together. 3.0 is designed to hand things to people, take things from them, and track lips to know when someone needs an object. It even has SONAR capability for translation of some speech, says Srinivasa. He can clear a table and do what a caregiver can do to some extent. HERB can bring a meal and even feed a meal to someone with a high spinal cord injury. The new head also has a stereo camera, a spinning laser, and can do a 360-degree scan of the room. The previous head only moved about 70 degrees either way. Collaborating at Work I want HERB to work in a human environment so there are two kinds of studies were looking at presently, he says. One is shared workspace collaboration: how you and HERB can work together on something like, say, putting together a bookshelf. The second is long-range prediction of people: watching HERB walk through a hallway or a crowd and safely navigating between people. Srinivasa also wants to point out that an important part of HERBs leap has come from algorithmic work. An advantage of a robot like this is it focuses on algorithms so we know what problem we have to solve, he says. Algorithms that once took twenty minutes to run now take twenty milliseconds. The more computations per second, the better you are in terms of reacting. Its also the ability to search large spaces from algorithmic ability. Even though he has a three-year-old and a six-year-old, Srinivasa does regard HERB a little like his third child, he laughs, and is intrigued to see what he can learn next. Im lucky to get to play with toys for a living, he says. Hopefully this one will one day help humans a great deal. Eric Butterman is an independent writer. For Further Discussion Im lucky to get to play with toys for a living. Hopefully this one will one day help humans a great deal.Prof. Siddhartha Srinivasa, University of Washington
